AN EVENING WITH THE AUTHORS
An Evening with the Authors* was created in early 2014 by the late “Big” Jim Leugers. Big Jim’s idea was to construct a unique platform for standup comedians to showcase a slightly different set of skills. The original pitch read,
“…a night of literary nonsense where some of the mid-west’s favorite comics will pose as accomplished authors and read excerpts from their fake crappy books that aren’t real or probably even any good.”
Performers and audiences were immediately sold on the idea. Authors* has since grown into a monthly event at the White Rabbit Cabaret that showcases the talents of not only some of the best standup comics in the Midwest but also standouts from the local improv and theatre scenes. A core cast made up of Sam Griswold, Stephen Vincent Giles, Pauline Shypula, Austin Reel, Joe Bates, Isaac Landfert and Jonathan Pfendler helped Big Jim sculpt his idea into a truly unique experience of literary satire and character monologues.
The premise is simple. A NPR style show is hosted by Dana Glass, the less successful cousin of a prominent radio personality. Dana presents to the audience some of the worlds most accomplished authors reading from their most recent works. The only catch is that Dana is played by a rotating cast and so are all of the authors. Also, none of it is real and all of it is ridiculous. Every show is different and the cast is always fluctuating, allowing guest performances by some of the area’s greatest comedic talents.
Big Jim may be gone but An Evening with the Authors* lives on.
