Justin Green’s Cincinnati Musical Legends
Friday August 25 to Tuesday September 26
The late great Justin Green (d. 2022) was a key figure and pioneer of the underground comics movement in San Francisco in the 1970s. Making Cincinnati his home in the late 1990s, he worked as a professional sign painter, performed music and continued to creating comics for various periodicals such as Signs of the Times magazine.
One of his last major projects was a 2019 collaboration with Shake It Records staff and Artworks students, illustrating local Cincinnati musical legends for a trading card deck. Six music figures drawn by Justin for the project were selected for this exhibit due their connections to King Records. This September marks the 80th anniversary of the legendary Cincinnati label. Also, on display will be “The King of Them All,” his comic strip on history of the King label, published in Pulse magazine in September 2000.
The opening for this exhibit will be on Friday August 25th from 4 to 7pm at MOTR Pub.
Fritz Pape will be providing music at 4:30pm.
Green’s daughter Julia, co-owner of the gallery (DSGN) CLLCTV in Northside will discuss her father’s life and art at 5:30pm.
