Album Review: ‘Bummer Year’ by Good Looks
Austin based indie rock band, Good Looks, currently consists of Tyler Jordan on vocals and guitar, Jake Ames on lead guitar, Robert Cherry on bass, and Phill Dunne on drums. In 2022, the quartet released their debut album Bummer Year. Being from Texas, it is hard not to notice the country influence on the album, most notably present in the vocals. Jordan’s country accent, although subtle, adds charm and depth the album. However, the influence doesn’t end there. The lyrics, although not quite as narrative, tell a story in the way many country songs do. Whether it’s about heartbreak and unrequited love in “Almost Automatic,” the album’s opener, or the complicated feelings many young folks have with where they’re from and where they’re going in the album’s titular track, “Bummer Year,” it is impossible not to connect with at least one of the tracks on the album. This is exciting debut from Good Looks has hooked many and has audiences anticipating the quartet’s next move.
