TONIGHT’S FEATURE: TOPH
Cincinnati cellist, Toph, defies genre. His unique sound blends classical, hip-hop, progressive rock, rap, spoken word, and beat poetry. Toph studied cello at CCM, and has toured worldwide as a classical cellist. Seeking new outlets for artistic expression, and not liking tuxedos much, Toph decided to do whatever he wanted to do. Eight months later, Toph’s first solo project, Bowing 808, is in the final stages of production. Toph uses only an electric cello, analog drum machines, a loop pedal, and his voice. There is never a backing track to a Toph show. There is no computer involved. Nothing is pre-recorded. All instruments are played live on stage by Toph, who then proceeds to recite out-of-sight rhymes from his mind in lightning-tight lines. His primary influences are Brahms and MF DOOM.
“is that a violin?”
“did you ever think of putting effects on your voice?”
“how did you do that”
“can you play cello on my beats?”
“A consummate chamber musician… stunning…”
*In order to further incentivize full participation and support, we offer cash prizes for those who perform and remain present while others are performing. We have two drawings throughout the evening: the first at 10:30/11ish for those who have performed up to that point, and another one at the end for everyone who has performed throughout the night. Stick around for your chance to win both!
